‘Fighter’ Review: Hrithik-Deepika Pack a Patriotic Punch

Siddharth Anand's film strikes emotional chord with high-octane action

‘Fighter’ Strikes Balance of Patriotism, Action and Emotions

Siddharth Anand’s ‘Fighter’, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, is a perfect watch for Republic Day with its heady dose of patriotism, action and drama. Released on January 26, the film narrates the Indian Air Force’s revenge mission after the Pulwama attack, with some added twists.

The first half focuses more on style and establishes Hrithik and Deepika’s chemistry as pilots. The actual mission feels rushed. The real punch comes in the second half as the story delves into emotional territory. Hrithik slaying terrorists while mouthing ‘Jai Hind’ evokes whistles. His interaction with Deepika’s father about successful daughters hits the patriotic spot.

Hrithik delivers an intense performance as the gritty pilot out to avenge his daughter’s death. Deepika impresses in uniform and her acted scenes pack a punch. Anil Kapoor shines as Hrithik’s strict senior, while Karan Singh Grover makes his presence felt.

Siddharth Anand’s direction is effective barring some overly dramatic moments. The dogfight sequences and emotional depth uplift the second half. The Balhara brothers’ music complements the film.

There are some logical gaps like Indian and Pakistani pilots conversing mid-air. But the film compensates with its patriotic fervor and soul. ‘Fighter’ succeeds in striking a balance between action set pieces and poignant moments. Watch it for Hrithik-Deepika’s chemistry and the nationalist sentiments it arouses.
