Budget Session is stalled, and the opposition staged a one-of-a-kind protest on the first floor of the Parliament building.
With the Budget Session stalled, opposition parties staged a one-of-a-kind protest at Parliament House on Tuesday. MPs held posters and banners in front of the SBI branch office on the first floor, demanding a JPC probe into the Adani issue.
MPs from 17 Opposition parties, including the Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Left parties, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), protested inside Parliament holding placards that read: ‘Modani, we want JPC,’ and ‘Modi Adani bhai bhai milkar khai Malai desh bechkar’. They also draped a large black banner from the first level, facing the Gandhi statue, with the words “We Want JPC.” The Trinamool Congress did not participate in the protest.
In both houses, the opposition has pressed for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the Adani controversy. Meanwhile, members of the ruling BJP have disrupted the proceedings in order to demand an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his remarks about Indian democracy in London.
The Parliament has not met for a single day since the second leg of the Budget Session began on March 13. Both houses were adjourned after a few minutes of sloganeering on Tuesday as well. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has proposed a meeting in his chamber to break the impasse, but both sides have maintained their positions.
