The Kremlin says its goals in Ukraine can be achieved through talks

The Kremlin was quoted as saying on Thursday that the goals of its “special military operation” in Ukraine remain unchanged but can be achieved through negotiations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to the Russian newspaper Izvestia was the latest in a series of statements this week, emphasizing that Moscow is open to talks – a change of tone that marks a humiliating defeat for the Russian military. The series follows as the war in Ukraine nears its end in its eighth month.

“The direction has not changed; the special military operation continues; it continues to achieve our goals,” Peskov said. “However, we have repeatedly reiterated that we are open to dialogue to achieve our objectives.”

While Russia has said it is open to talks, this week’s repeated mention of the possibility of negotiations is surprising.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow was ready for talks with the West, but the United States dismissed the statement as “currency”.

Lavrov told Izvestia about the Thursday issue: “We will not run after anyone. If there are any special serious proposals, we are ready to consider them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has refused to talk to President Vladimir Putin after Russia declared four Ukrainian territories last month and missiles rained on Ukrainian cities this week in the wake of an attack on a vital bridge between Russia and Crimea.
