Shocked by Sourav Ganguly’s sacking as BCCI President, urge PM to allow him to contest ICC chief elections: Mamata Banerjee

On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over Sourav Ganguly not being re-nominated for the post of BCCI president. Still, Jay shah was allowed a second term as secretary. She also said she would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to permit the previous Indian captain to contest for the post of ICC President.

Banerjee visited North Bengal on a four-day visit on Monday. Once landing at the Bagdogra field, the chief minister aforementioned, “Sourav is our pride, and he contended well and did well as an administrator. He was given the responsibility of the Board President for three years, and he performed that role fine. We do not grasp why he was removed once finishing his term, and Amitbabu’s son (Amit Shah’s son, Jay Shah) remained there. We’ve got no downside with him continuing as BCCI secretary. However, we wish to understand why Sourav was far away from the post of BCCI President.

She said, “It is my humble honour and request to the Prime Minister to permit him to contest elections within the ICC. He’s being denied. What’s his fault?”

When Ganguly was removed from the BCCI, the TMC, Congress and CPI(M) leaders of Bengal lodged a strong protest against the decision. He has alleged that the former Indian captain is paying the price for saying no to the BJP.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, responding to Mamata’s attack, said that the TMC chief should remove Shah Rukh Khan and make Sourav Ganguly the brand ambassador of West Bengal.

“Remove Shahrukh Khan and make Sourav Ganguly the brand ambassador of West Bengal. If Mamata Banerjee wanted to extend the tenure of Sourav Ganguly, she should have made him the brand ambassador of WB. Don’t play politics in sports,” the official said in a statement, news agency ANI reported.

He also said that the PM stays away from these things.

Ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, as the BJP announced its decision to take on the TMC, Ganguly’s name was tossed as the party’s potential chief ministerial candidate. However, Ganguly, who kept his cards close to his chest, could not make the most of it in the end.

On May 7 this year, Ganguly hosted a dinner at his Kolkata home to meet Union Minister Amit Shah, triggering a new round of speculation.

Before the BJP saw Ganguly as the essential face for Bengal, the hugely popular batsman in the state was wooed by the Trinamool. Sources close to him said he felt tremendous pressure from both sides in the 2021 elections and decided not to engage in politics.

BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya said, “Politics should not be done on a personality like Sourav Ganguly. If Sourav Ganguly was so loved, why was Shah Rukh Khan chosen as the brand ambassador of Bengal?
