Pakistan Supreme Court trends on X as Chief Justice berates judge in viral clip

Video of CJ Qazi Faiz Isa interrupting judge in courtroom sparks outrage on X, raises questions on justice system

Pakistan’s Supreme Court sparked outrage on social media after a video of Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa berating a fellow judge went viral. The over 2-minute clip led to #SupremeCourtofPakistan trending heavily on X (Twitter) on Friday.

The video shows CJ Isa interrupting and scolding the judge over a complaint submitted on the judge’s behalf. “I don’t know this concept of Munshi (clerk). There is no concept of Munshi in Supreme Court,” Isa is heard saying.

He adds sternly, “I will not even read such a complaint from any Munshi. You pursue the case yourself.” As the judge tries to clarify, CJ Isa snaps – “I will not listen to Munshi’s complaint.”

The confrontational video has evoked strong reactions on X with many questioning the conduct of the chief justice and state of affairs in Pakistan’s apex court.

The controversy comes a day after Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, who was in line to become the next CJ, resigned from his position as second senior most judge.

Another Supreme Court judge Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi also resigned on Wednesday amidst a Supreme Judicial Council probe over misconduct charges.

The developments and the viral clip have dented the Pakistan judiciary’s image at a time when its functioning is already under the scanner. Social media uproar shows declining public faith in the institution meant to uphold rule of law.

The treatment of a Supreme Court judge by the CJ himself indicates a worrisome situation. Pakistan’s Supreme Court is in the eye of a storm once again as its foundations of justice are under question.
