Thieves strike govt employee’s house in Chhattisgarh again, steal jewellery worth lakhs
Just a year after theft, thieves broke into clerk's quarter in Surajpur and stole gold jewellery kept in branded locker
In a shocking repeat crime, thieves targeted the house of a government employee in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur district and decamped with gold jewellery worth around ₹8 lakhs. This comes just a year after the previous theft at the same clerk’s residence.
Varun Prakash Sendane, who works as a clerk in the District Child Protection Unit, had locked his quarter on January 10 before leaving for Ambikapur. On returning, he found the lock broken and cupboard open with all the gold jewellery missing.
The stolen valuables include 6 gold bangles, 2 mangalsutras, 3 chains, 2 rings, 3 earrings and some coins, amounting to almost 7.5 tolas of gold.
Ironically, after the previous theft, Sendane had stored the jewellery in a locker of a reputed brand. But the thieves managed to break into that as well. The bills kept along with the jewellery were also stolen.
Sendane has alleged that the police undervalued the theft and registered a complaint for only ₹1.2 lakhs loss, while jewellery worth ₹7-8 lakhs was stolen. Unable to furnish bills of old jewellery, he has demanded a revised FIR.
The repeated theft despite a locker shows the brazenness of criminals in the area. Locals have questioned police’s failure to crackdown on thieves earlier. The cops are now scanning CCTV footage but are yet to make a breakthrough.
The double theft at the clerk’s house exposes the law and order situation in Surajpur. The police must nab the culprits immediately and take steps to improve surveillance and prevent such repeat crimes.
