Supreme Court approves extension of Chintan Upadhyay trial

The Supreme Court has extended the period of the sessions court hearing against artist Chintan Upadhyay and others in the case of the alleged murder of his wife – artist Hema Upadhyay – and their lawyer.

Special Public Prosecutor Vaibhav Bagade on Tuesday informed the sessions court about the extension of the apex court to conclude the trial by March 2023.

In September last year, the Supreme Court granted bail to Chintan on the ground that he had already spent six years in jail. It then directed the sessions court to expedite the trial and conclude it within six months.

Chintan was arrested in December 2015 for the murder of Hema and her lawyer Haresh Bhambani under Indian Penal Code charges including murder, destruction of evidence, and criminal conspiracy. Their bodies were found on December 12, 2015, in a box thrown into a drain in Kandivali. Chintan was arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police on 22 December the same year.
