Gujarat: After being found guilty in a defamation case, Rahul tweets about truth and nonviolence by quoting Gandhiji.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted a quote from Mahatma Gandhi about truth and nonviolence after a court in Surat, Gujarat, sentenced him to two years in prison for criminal defamation related to his “Modi surname” comments.

“My faith is founded on truth and non-violence. Truth is my god, and nonviolence is by means of obtaining it. – Mahatma Gandhi,” the Congress leader remarked in a tweet in Hindi soon after the court ruling.

Gandhi was convicted to two years in prison by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma for his ‘Modi surname’ statement made during an electoral rally in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

The judge gave him bail and deferred his sentence for 30 days so he could appeal to a higher court, according to the attorney for the Congress politician, Babu Mangukiya.

Gandhi was convicted of criminal defamation under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Criminal Code, according to Mangukiya.

Gandhi was present in the court when it gave its verdict.

The charge was launched against Gandhi for his claimed comment, “Why do all the thieves have the surname Modi?” in response to a complaint made by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

The Wayanad Lok Sabha representative made the statements at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, on April 13, 2019, during Lok Sabha electioneering.
